TABERNACLE VISTA APARTMENTS, San Francisco, CA
This 25,000 square foot affordable family housing apartment building is a contemporary rendering of the traditional San Francisco apartment building. Its size and scale, along with bay windows, established cornice line at the same height as its neighbors, and a variety of textures, allows it to fit well into the fabric of the City.
The residential portion of the building is U-shaped, surrounding a shared courtyard. A parking stacker machine was used to provide a parking ratio of 2:1 units to spaces to meet City requirements. At street level, a finely textured ceramic tile honors adjacent brick buildings, while providing for easy maintenance.
The site was owned by Kaiser Corporation, which owned a nearby apartment building that was slated for demolition to make room for the expanding hospital. In an agreement with the San Francisco Development Corporation, Kaiser donated nearby land that it owned, and provided a $5M grant for the development.
